What is a wood-fired sauna?
A sauna whose stove burns wood to heat the stones, instead of an electric element. You pour water on the stones for steam (löyly). Many public wood-fired saunas are small huts, trailers or floating saunas, often by a lake or the sea.
Are wood-fired saunas hotter?
Not necessarily. Traditional saunas, wood or electric, usually run between 150°F and 195°F, according to Cleveland Clinic. The difference people notice is the softer, rounder heat and the smell of the fire.
